Recovering after a upper eyelid surgery: Read Nanc’s experience!

In this blog you can read about Nanc’s experience. She underwent an eyelid correction of the upper eyelids at Faceland in February. She has now fully recovered from the procedure and is happy to share with us how everything went.

HOW WAS THE SURGERY DAY?

The day of the operation I was not nervous at all. To be on the safe side, I did take two paracetamol before the operation. Partly because I quickly suffer from migraines. Once on the operating table, I was a bit tense. Fortunately, my mother was allowed into the operating room with me. I thought the anesthetic injections were scary, but they were done in no time. It doesn’t really hurt, but it’s annoying pricks.

Once the injections were done, I felt nothing. I only smelled a nasty smell during the burning of the blood vessels, but this is normal. During the operation I just chatted with the practitioner and there was a very relaxed atmosphere. The operation went very smoothly. It all went very quickly. After about 45 minutes I was done and back outside.

I was advised to cool for 15 minutes every hour. I used cooling goggles for this, because I find this easier than separate cold packs. The wounds still bleed a little now and then, but not very badly. Although the end result is not yet visible, I already notice a difference. I no longer have to raise my eyes to see better. I had about 1.5 cm of skin removed. That is quite a lot.

HOW DID THE FIRST DAY AFTER THE OPERATION GO?

I am still very glad I did the surgery. I can let my eyelids hang relaxed without making my vision worse. I always had trouble seeing overhanging eyelids or eyelashes. I think I will have a lot less headaches. It feels like a relief.

I did suffer from bleeding, which makes one eye a bit red. My other eye was a little swollen. But all in all I really like it. I’m not in pain either, thankfully. I believe that regular cooling is very important. I still do that every hour for fifteen minutes. For this I use gauze between my eyes and the cooling goggles. This works well and does not feel uncomfortable.

The first night after the operation was less pleasant. The advice is to sleep with your head slightly elevated and on your back. This made it difficult for me to sleep. Finally, with the help of a sleeping pill, I fell asleep.

The most important thing is that I don’t suffer from pain. I was afraid of this. Of course you feel that something has happened to your eyes, but that’s all. I think taking a lot of rest also helps with this. I do almost nothing and that is definitely recommended in the days after your operation. Although it is a relatively minor intervention, I don’t think you should underestimate it.

HOW DID THE FIRST FEW DAYS AFTER THE OPERATION GO?

The stitches were removed today. For me this was on day 8. The stitches are removed after an average of 7-9 days. To be honest, I was more nervous about removing the stitches than about the surgery itself. But also removing the stitches was done in no time. This also went very fast.

When the stitches were out, I immediately saw that my eyes were still a bit swollen and that my one eye was not completely healed. This is because I was lax with cooling and taking rest. I can advise everyone to take aftercare really seriously. This is really conducive to your end result.

Still, I’m very happy with the end result. The difference is so visible. The aftercare was a bit disappointing for me. You really need to take a lot of rest and cool down properly and not just in the 2 or 3 days after surgery. Do it as long as possible! Other than that, the surgery went really well for me 100%. I want to say to everyone who is considering eyelid surgery: do it! It makes a world of difference.

WHAT IS THE RESULT OF THE OPERATION?

I am extremely happy with the result. I no longer see droopy eyelids or eyelashes when I open my eyes. I can also relax my eyelids instead of having to raise them to see clearly. I have also received many compliments about my blue eyes!
